#111 Invest in your coaching development through group supervision for £40 per month.
The survey results are in: group supervision gives you "all you need"
Grow the Coach exists to provide an affordable blend of online individual and group supervision for coaches at all stages of their development. Many coaches choose group supervision because there are benefits from reflecting on their practice with a group of practitioners rather than their supervisor alone and, because it is more affordable than individual supervision, it represents an excellent entry point to coaching supervision.
I worked with 12 groups of coaches last year in group supervision. Most of these were one-time sessions or short-duration supervision programmes, but four were closed groups that met quarterly and had been in place for a longer period (1.5 - 3.5 years). I surveyed these longer-standing groups to understand their expectations and experiences of group supervision. While this is a small sample and may not be representative, the results are interesting reading if you are considering engaging in supervision and are wondering whether individual or group supervision would be better for you.
Findings
1. Reason for engaging in group supervision: Around 75% chose group supervision for affordability. The majority were curious about supervision or mentioned the group aspect being of interest rather than individual supervision. It appears that wanting to become accredited with a professional body is not a driver for engaging in group supervision (57% said they were not interested or only possibly interested in accreditation, whereas 43% are already accredited).
2. Expectations of group supervision: Everybody surveyed said they get what they need from group supervision and the majority said it is more useful than they had expected.
“I didn't really know what to expect - the word Supervision is unhelpful, it suggests checking up on you, making sure you are doing things right, but this isn't the experience. Coaching supervision is supportive, challenging and thought provoking. It provides a space to share, to explore difficult situations, discuss any worries, problem solve, and continue your learning as a coach.”
3. Experience of group supervision: 71% understand supervision more than they did before they engaged in group supervision. The prime benefits are sharing and learning from each other and an experienced coaching supervisor, and the length of sessions is ‘just right’. 63% said they get all the supervision they need from quarterly group sessions, whereas 37% engage in both group and individual supervision.
“I find group supervision enjoyable and worthwhile, it is an integral part of my practice, and I am grateful for it, as a coach I feel supported, and the collective intelligence of both the supervisor and the group helps me to stretch for deeper insights into my client's issues and to grow.”
I have the capacity for one or two more groups in 2025. I flex the session length and fees to suit the needs and size of the group. Your investment would be a maximum of £40 per month for a 12-month contract.
“Thank you, Jeremy, for creating such a great space!”
