#124 What should you expect to pay for supervision?

An issue for coaches is that coaching supervisors do not seem particularly transparent about what they charge. I just conducted an online search and found only one UK-based supervisor who appeared to be open about their fees (they charge £250 per hour for individual supervision), and several saying things like, “I charge what you charge your clients.”  If you should expect to be charged what you charge your clients, that would mean the average for individual supervision of personal coaching is £125 (actual rates vary wildly from £50 to over £150), and the average for individual supervision of corporate coaching would exceed £260 per hour (source: Lir Cowman).

Of course, there are options with no fees. You can arrange a peer-to-peer relationship with another coach on an exchange-of-value basis, where you meet informally to discuss and review your coaching practice. There is nothing wrong with that approach. Similarly, you can arrange a peer group of coaches for informal group supervision. Research shows you are more likely to discuss coaching themes in such groups and are more likely to discuss coaching cases with a professional supervisor, i.e., someone who is qualified and experienced.

Professional supervision could be undertaken in open groups (likely to require the lowest cost per hour investment), closed groups, individual supervision (likely to be the most expensive), or even a blend of individual and group work.

If you are ready to engage a professional supervisor, you might ask yourself, why can’t coaching supervisors be more transparent about their fees?

I have recently re-launched my website, which includes a unique pricing calculator to help you see what you can expect to pay for supervision. You simply adjust two sliders (the hours you coach and the rate you charge) to get an indication of how much supervision you might choose to have and what I would charge you for it. I have also included some examples of my supervision packages with prices. These include closed group supervision, individual supervision, and a blend of both.

Btw, my typical rate for individual supervision is £150 per hour (range: £120 - £200) and £60 - £80 per person per hour for closed groups of up to four coaches (usually for 90 - 120 minutes per session). Many of my clients choose to spread their investment in supervision by paying via monthly direct debit.
